Rather than relying on heavy handed regulation, he proposes we need to re-assess how we think about our homes and move away from them just being technical systems and back to a sense of place within the home and community for the long term. Alan will also address form and function relating to the environment the home may exist in.

Effective Stormwater Management: Beyond the Guidebook - Business as Usual
Time: 10:00am - 10:50am Breakout #4 A4

Urban stormwater management and the associated processes have been linked to adverse an impacts on aquatic environments. Regulatory agencies are actively pursuing the implementation of impact neutral infrastructure projects and urban development. This process must involve more than just engineering, rather we must engage planners and the public to include the multitude of values linking recreation, land use form and function, and terrestrial environments in addition to streams and aquatic habitat. This session will highlight some of the successes and problems faced during recent initiatives to provide innovative and sustainable urban environs in an informed and pragmatic manner.

Changes in the Forest Industry and the Demand for Timber
Time: 12:45pm -1:30 pm Afternoon Keynote MH

There is no doubt that BC’s Forest Industry has undergone major changes over the last decade or more. Some of these changes have been particularly difficult for communities and companies, and for many the industry’s future is uncertain. However, there have been important developments and trends worldwide that are not as well known as those that have captured the local headlines. Consumers’ increasing concern about the environment and the source of the wood products they purchase is resulting in a growing demand for environmentally certified or “green” timber. These facts will have a profound impact upon the future shape of the BC Forest industry.

In addition to his duties as the head of FSC Canada since 2005, Antony Marcil is known internationally for his leadership in industrial and urban environment, health and safety policy and practices. He was the President and CEO of the World Environment Center for 10 years. In 1997, the Earth Times reported Mr. Marcil as one of the world’s Top 100 Figures in Environment, Sustainable Development and Social Issues.
