About Living Green
The term “Living Green” captures the vision of people living in a way that respects and protects the ecosystems of the communities in which they reside. “Living Green Comox Valley” has been founded by Comox Valley citizens who are committed to reducing the ecological impacts of our day-to-day lives and preserving the quality of life that we enjoy in our special part of the world.
About Building Green
For 2008, we have chosen to focus on construction and specifically buildings because they have a significant impact on the environment. Buildings use huge amounts of materials, energy and water (our natural resources) and the built environment infringes on the natural environment.
In numbers:
- 40% of the world’s raw materials and energy are used in the construction of buildings
- 36% of Canada’s greenhouse gases come from the built environment (second only to cars)
- 60% of the electricity produced in BC is used in buildings
- 30% of the garbage in BC landfills is demolition, land clearing & construction waste
- 12% of our potable water in BC is used in buildings
